The Women’s Fund of Posey County, held by the Posey County Community Foundation, is now accepting applications for its 2026 Grants Program. Nonprofit organizations serving Posey County are invited to apply now through Monday, March 9th, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.

The Women's Fund of Posey County holds an annual grant cycle to award funding to charitable partners addressing a wide range of local needs. Funding is available to support programs and projects that make a meaningful impact in Posey County communities.

Alaina Allyn of Mount Vernon High School Named 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar for Posey County

Posey County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Posey County: Alaina Allyn, Mount Vernon High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are recognized for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“The nominating committee was deeply impressed by Alaina Allyn and felt she truly exemplifies the qualities the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program seeks to recognize,” said Amy Smith, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact.

“She is highly involved in her school and community, has held meaningful leadership positions, and balances strong academic performance with participation in athletics and community activities. Alaina’s work ethic, character, and commitment to giving back set her apart, and the committee is confident she will continue to make a positive impact in Posey County and beyond.”

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides full tuition, required fees, and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years of full-time undergraduate study leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Scholars also join the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects them with resources and opportunities to lead on campus and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI).

“I am deeply grateful and humbly honored to be awarded the Lilly Endowment [Community] Scholarship. This achievement would not have been possible without the continuous support of my family, teachers, and administrators; all glory to God for the strengths and abilities He has given me! I am committed to making the most of this opportunity by pursuing the career of a nurse practitioner and returning to Posey County to serve the community that has given me so much,” said Alaina Allyn, Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

In nominating Posey County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, the committee considered GPA, curriculum, school activities, work experience, community service, volunteer activities, personal statement, essay, and a finalist interview. After narrowing the field of applicants, nominees were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI), the statewide administrator of the program, for final selection.

Since its inception in 1997-1998, Lilly Endowment has supported this program with tuition grants totaling more than $505 million, benefiting over 5,400 Indiana students. The program’s primary purposes are:

To raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana.
To increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations play.
To encourage and support Lilly Scholars’ engagement with Indiana leaders to improve quality of life statewide.

The Community Foundation Alliance is proud to announce that applications are now open for its Community Scholarship Program, offering hundreds of opportunities for students across Southwest Indiana and in select areas of Illinois and Kentucky.

These scholarships, made possible by generous local donors, provide financial support for students pursuing college, university, technical programs, or other post-secondary education paths.

The Posey County Community Foundation announced that more than $166,000 has been awarded to 39 local nonprofits through the Community Good Grants Program. These grants support projects that strengthen the community and improve the quality of life for local residents.

$2,500 to the American Red Cross Southwest Indiana Chapter for year-round disaster preparedness efforts in Posey County, Indiana
$708 to Albion Fellows Bacon Center, Inc. to purchase items used to enhance its Domestic and Sexual Violence Support Groups by funding activities that promote healing and community building to survivors
$2,620 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Indiana to recruit Bigs to grow the Community-Based program in Posey County
$2,100 to Bread of Life Ministry, Inc. to pay freight for donated food and to purchase food items at discounted prices to distribute to low-income families in the tri-state area
$1,000 to Buffalo Trace Council-Boy Scouts of America to support scouting financial assistance for Posey County Scouts

The 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Application is Now Open in Posey County

The 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available in Posey County through the Posey County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation Alliance. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) will provide 147 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Posey County.

LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis, leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Posey County through the Posey County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation Alliance, is open to all Indiana residents who:

graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2026 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2026;
intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and
meet the criteria specific to Posey County Community Foundation. Visit poseycountycf.org/lilly-endowment-community-scholarship-program for complete information regarding the Posey County application criteria.

Students can learn more about the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Posey County and apply for this scholarship by visiting the Posey County Community Foundation website. Applications must be completed and submitted by August 25, 2025, to be considered.

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: GPA, curriculum, community service, volunteer activities, essay, personal statement/unusual circumstances, work experience, honors and awards, school activities, financial need or special hardships, and interview. Three finalists will be nominated by the Posey County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-98 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $505 million. More than 5,400 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

The primary purposes of LECSP are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

Application Opens for Women’s Fund 2025 Grant Cycle

The Women’s Fund of Posey County, a fund with the Posey County Community Foundation, is now accepting applications for projects or programs supporting Posey County. Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply by completing the grant application no later than March 3, 2025.

The Community Foundation welcomes funding requests from nonprofit organizations that are deemed tax-exempt under sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code and from governmental agencies serving the county. Applications submitted by an entity under the auspices of another agency must include a written statement signed by the agency’s board president on behalf of the board of directors agreeing to act as the entity’s fiscal sponsor, to receive grant funds if awarded, and to oversee the proposed project.

The project or program must provide support in one of the following areas:

· Community Development

· Education

· Environment

· Health

· Human Services

· Youth Development

Posey County Community Foundation Announces the 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program Recipient

The Posey County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Posey County – Lora Commens, North Posey High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership. Scholarship award alternates were also announced. The first alternate, Maggie McCutchan, will receive a scholarship from the Friends of Posey County Fund. Shelby Lang was named the second alternate.

“The nominating committee unanimously agreed that Lora was the ideal choice for this honor. She is not only a well-rounded student but also strives to be a role model for others,” said Amy Smith, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact for the Posey County Community Foundation.

Smith continued, “This year, 17 exceptionally talented students applied for the scholarship. Each one excelled academically and actively participated in a wide variety of extracurricular and community activities. The quality of the applications made the selection process challenging for the dedicated committee, who carefully reviewed and fairly scored each submission according to the established guidelines.”

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

In determining Posey County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar nominees, consideration was given to GPA, curriculum, community service and volunteer activities, essay, personal statement, work experience, honors and awards, school activities, financial need, and finalist interview by the LECSP Nominating Committee. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1997-98 school year. Since then, grant funding in excess of $490 million has supported more than 5,300 Indiana students who have received scholarships through the program.

The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

More Than $17,500 Granted to Mount Vernon High School from the Wildcats Remembered Fund

The Wildcats Remembered Fund, held by the Posey County Community Foundation, recently awarded Mount Vernon High School (MVHS) a $17,860 grant. Foundation staff, along with Principal Dr. Scott Strieter and Vice Principal Mr. Cody Ungetheim, presented the grant to MVHS students. The Wildcats Remembered Fund’s grants to MVHS continue to support a wide range of educational and extracurricular activities that benefit the school and its students.

Vice Principal Ungetheim shared, “I would like to emphasize that the Wildcats Remembered Fund had a profound impact not only on the high school students but also on the entire district last year. Student organizations and clubs were able to access much-needed resources that enriched their educational experiences at Mount Vernon High School.”

Last year, MVHS used the grant funds for a variety of initiatives, including hosting a convocation on vaping for students across the Mount Vernon Metropolitan School District, purchasing calculators for algebra students, providing t-shirts for the robotics team, acquiring additional band instruments, covering National Honor Society dues, and funding the Business Professionals of America conference trip.

The Wildcats Remembered Fund was created by G. Donald and Cecelia J. Goerlitz to benefit Mount Vernon High School. Mr. Goerlitz served as principal of MVHS from 1971 to 1994. The Posey County Community Foundation enables donors to support specific causes in perpetuity through endowed funds. Over the past 30 years, the Wildcats Remembered community has helped bring the Goerlitzs’ vision to life. Thanks to annual contributions, the fund continues to make a meaningful impact on the academic success of current MVHS students.

Many of our donors have chosen to honor their loved ones, communities, high schools, colleges, and professions by establishing scholarship funds through their local Community Foundations in Daviess, Gibson, Knox, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick Counties. These funds support the annual Community Scholarship programs, providing valuable opportunities for students in Southwest Indiana. Thanks to their contributions, applications are being accepted now, with a deadline of Monday, January 20, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

$65,000 Grant Awarded to Posey County Council on Aging for Capital Improvements

The Posey County Council on Aging has been awarded a $65,000 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation’s Capital Improvement Project Grant program. This generous funding will enhance the center for local seniors, ensuring a better quality of life and increased accessibility.

The Capital Improvement Project Grant was a targeted funding opportunity for non-profit organizations in the county with existing facilities. The Posey County Advisory Board identified 13 agencies eligible to apply, of which 8 submitted proposals by the deadline. After a thorough review process, five agencies were chosen as finalists. Committee members met with each finalist before presenting their recommendations to the entire Posey County Advisory Board, who then voted and made the final decision. This grant will fund improvements to the Council’s facilities, including upgrades to restrooms, installation of exterior security cameras, and the addition of automatic entrance doors. These enhancements aim to create a more welcoming environment that promotes community engagement and participation, particularly among Posey County’s aging population.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Posey County Community Foundation for their support,” said Brooke Cohoon, Executive Director of the Posey County Council on Aging. “This grant will allow us to make vital improvements to our facility that will directly benefit our seniors.” Cohoon stated, “The Council is celebrating its 50 ^th Anniversary this year, so this was perfect timing for us to complete upgrades to the facility.”

The Posey County Council on Aging is committed to addressing the needs of seniors in the community through various programs and services, including nutritional assistance, social activities, and educational workshops. It also provides transportation, Medicare Assistance, and homemaking services.

“Investing in our senior community is essential,” said Amy Smith, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact, for the Posey County Community Foundation. “We believe this grant will make a significant impact on the quality of life for seniors in Posey County, and we are proud to support such a vital organization.”

Celebrating Dedication to Philanthropy: Jane Koch

(Mt. Vernon, Indiana) The Posey County Community Foundation celebrates outgoing advisory board member Jane Koch's dedication to promoting philanthropy in Posey County. Since 2015, Koch has served in various roles with the Foundation, including as a member of the essential Community Good Grants Committee and the Women’s Fund of Posey County. She currently sits on the Lilly Scholarship Committee.

Koch, a retired English teacher and now a librarian at St. Wendel School, is also founder of the Vikings Remembered Fund held with the Posey County Community Foundation. This designated fund provides financial support to North Posey High School for various educational purposes.

The Foundation’s advisory board, made up of local leaders, promotes philanthropy, builds endowment, identifies community needs, and strives to improve quality of life throughout Posey County. The advisory board's collaborative efforts ensure that grantmaking and scholarship recommendations are tailored to most effectively benefit Posey County.

“I see the impact on our community, and I'm proud to have been a part of it all,” Koch says, reflecting on her nine-year tenure. “The quality of young people who apply to our community scholarships is incredible. You see what amazing things these kids have done. They are hardworking and have big ideas. I’m proud to serve on the Lilly Scholarship Committee this year.”

At the advisory board’s June meeting, Foundation staff Deanna Rhodes and Amy Smith presented Koch with a special award to recognize and honor her commitment to philanthropy and the well-being of the community.

Women’s Fund of Posey County Announces Grant Opportunity

Applications will be considered from nonprofit organizations that are deemed tax-exempt under 501(c)(3) and 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Applications submitted by an entity under the auspices of another agency must include a written statement signed by the agency’s board president on behalf of the board of directors agreeing to act as the entity’s fiscal sponsor, to receive grant monies if awarded, and to oversee the proposed project.

The project or program must provide support in one of the following areas:

· Education

· Environment

· Health

· Human Services

· Youth Development

The Women’s Fund Steering Committee will review funding requests and contact grant applicants for an interview. Posey County Community Foundation Announces The 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Recipient

The Posey County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Posey County – Lily Hagan of Mt. Vernon Senior High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“The nominating committee felt that Lily was the perfect choice as the recipient, not only is she a well-rounded student but also strives to be a role model to others, while her involvement in the community and volunteerism is outstanding”, said Amy Smith, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact for the Posey County Community Foundation.

Lily is the daughter of Brian and Chelsea Hagan, of Evansville, Indiana, and plans to attend Indiana University or the University of Notre Dame to study Business Finance. In addition to excelling academically, she has been involved in a variety of school activities including the Student Council, National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, Key Club, and FFA. Lily has received multiple honors and awards in music including being named Outstanding Musician and the Leonard Bernstein Musicianship Award. She performs with the MVHS Concert Band, Marching Band, and the Wolfgang Community Orchestra.

Lily volunteers her time with Vanderburgh Humane Society, the Adopt-A-Highway program, and is the founder of Volunteer Bridge of Posey County, and Mentors for Music. She has held many leadership positions both in and out of school and has a strong work ethic.

In determining Posey County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar nominee, consideration was given to academic achievement in completed course work, the difficulty of the high school curriculum, completion of college prep curriculum prior to graduation, community service, and volunteer activities by the LECSP Nominating Committee. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

“This year we had 10 extremely talented students apply for the scholarship. Each student not only excelled academically but also participated in a wide range of extracurricular and community activities,” said Smith. She added, “The quality of the applications made the selection process difficult for the very dedicated committee, which thoroughly reviewed each application and scored fairly based on the set forth guidelines.”

Scholarship award alternates were also announced. The first alternate, Rylee Schmuck will receive a scholarship from the Friends of Posey County Fund. Jackson Graff was named the second alternate.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-99 school year and has supported the program every year since with grants totaling in excess of $505 million. More than 5,200 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception.

Posey County Community Foundation Awards More Than $164,000 To 35 Nonprofit Partners

The Posey County Community Foundation has awarded $164,774.78 in grants to 35 local nonprofit organizations through its 2023 Community Good Grants program. This year’s grants provide flexible funding for a variety of charitable projects and organizations serving Posey County.

This year’s grant recipients were:

· $9,710.78 to the Town of Cynthiana for the Community Center to make improvements to the restroom to accommodate families and meet ADA requirements;

· $5,000 to Youth First, Inc. to provide school-based Social Workers and community programs to strengthen 2300 youth and families in Posey County, at no cost to families;

· $8,510 to Mount Vernon-Black Township Parks and Recreation to build a new office for the Maintenance Division;

· $5,000 to Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet, Inc. to purchase 250 pairs of athletic-type shoes for the most disadvantaged elementary students in North Posey Schools;

· $2,500 to the Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana to facilitate 81 JA experiences in Posey Co, serving 1,782 students, focusing on Work Readiness, Entrepreneurship, and Financial Literacy;

· $8,000 to Thrive to provide high-quality, holistic afterschool programming to Mt. Vernon youth in K - 8th grade from West Elementary and the Junior High School;

· $7,000 to the River Bend Food Pantry for the Summer Kids Program;

· $2,100 to Bread of Life Ministry Inc. to pay the freight for donated food and to purchase food items at discounted prices to distribute to low-income families in the Tri-State area;

Wildcats Remembered Fund held by the Posey County Community Foundation recently awarded a grant to the Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) for $17,322.23. The grant was presented to students of MVHS along with vice-principal Mr. Ungetheim to provide further learning opportunities for students.

The Wildcats Remembered Fund has made and continues to make a significant positive impact on MVHS by supporting a wide range of educational and extracurricular activities that benefit the school and its students. MVHS principal, Mr. Kyle Jones, commented “We greatly appreciate the support and generosity of Wildcats Remembered”. Jones added, “Every year we utilize the funds to offset graduation costs, then look at purchases that would increase achievement or develop leadership. Two years ago, we were able to purchase graphing calculators for the math department. This year, we want to bring in guest speakers on several topics”.

MVHS has utilized past grant funds to purchase small engines for use in Ag classes, gaming chairs for the eSports team, covered registration fees for a student leadership conference, made upgrades in the media center, and paid for meals at the Academic Honors night.

The Wildcats Remembered Fund is a designated fund created by G. Donald and Cecelia J. Goerlitz to benefit MVHS. Designated funds with the Posey County Community Foundation allow donors to support specific organizations in perpetuity. Over the past 29 years, the Wildcats Remembered community has carried Mr. & Mrs. Goerlitz's dream to fruition. Community Foundation Alliance Recognizes Staff Member Amy Smith Through New Grant Program

The Community Foundation Alliance would like to congratulate staff member Amy Smith on her recent anniversary of employment. Smith selected Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet supporting Posey County schools to receive a $500 grant through the Generosity at Work Grant Program to recognize her work anniversary with the Alliance.

The recently introduced Generosity at Work Grant Program enables Alliance staff members to contribute to the communities they serve by recommending a $500 grant to the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of their preference through the Ronald L. Bauer Regional Fund on their work anniversary.

Smith recently celebrated her second work anniversary as the Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact for Gibson and Posey counties – part of the nine-county footprint of Alliance affiliates. She identifies the needs of the community by working with community leaders through the grants and scholarships committees. Her work directly improves the well-being of residents in Gibson and Posey counties.

Along with her community-impacting career, Smith serves on various nonprofit boards to further her passion for helping her community. Her $500 grant recommendation was to Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet for providing new shoes to students in Posey County. “I am passionate about the work of this organization. I have seen first-hand how students in need who are given a new pair of shoes turn into happy classroom contributors,” explained Smith. “2022 was the inaugural year of Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet in Posey County, during this time the organization was able to distribute over 330 pairs of new shoes and 900 pairs of new socks to students that met the eligibility criteria in the three elementary schools in the MSD of Mt. Vernon.”

Smith discussed how after the first shoe distribution, she knew this program needed to be implemented throughout Posey County. She assisted with initial plans to expand to the MSD of North Posey. Smith added, “This year we will be able to reach students at all MSD of Mt. Vernon schools along with the two elementary schools in North Posey. My hope is that next year we will be in every school. This work is done strictly through donations received from sponsors and community members.”

Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet was established in 2009 as an organization that provides a new pair of shoes to every student identified by the Family Resource Youth Service Center coordinator at each of the schools they serve. Posey County Community Foundation Welcomes New Local Advisory Board Members

The Posey County Community Foundation welcomes one new advisory board member: Jim Alsop. Alsop joins the other dedicated business and community leaders volunteering their time and talents to grow our impact within the community.

This fiscal year’s advisory board also includes Hans Schmitz (president), Dr. Kathryn Lee-Kalsch (vice president), Ashley Dorsam (secretary), Maureen Barton, Michael Harshbarger, Kathy Kanowsky, Jane Koch, Jake McGennis, Joy Millay, Tony Noelle, Josh Orem, Jody Pfister, Shelley Powell, and Weston Stewart.

Volunteer members of the advisory board play a vital role in the success of the Community Foundation. They focus on local asset development, learning about the community’s greatest needs and nonprofits that support those needs, and recommending grants and scholarships.

"The active participation of community members on our advisory board is essential to the achievements of our mission. Through their dedicated volunteering, they tirelessly contribute their time to ensure that the contributions from donors consistently create a positive influence on the well-being of individuals in Posey County," said advisory board president, Hans Schmitz.

Posey County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications For The 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program

The 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship (LECSP) application is now available in Posey County through the Posey County Community Foundation. The LECSP will provide 147 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Posey County. LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Posey County through the Posey County Community Foundation, is open to all Indiana residents who:

• graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2024 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2024;

• intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and

• meet the criteria specific to their local Community Foundation.

Students can learn more about the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Posey County and apply for this scholarship by visiting https://www.poseycountycf.org/lilly-endowment-community-scholarship-program . Applications must be completed and submitted by Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at 12:00 pm (noon) to be considered.

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: GPA, curriculum, community service, volunteer activities, essay, personal statement/unusual circumstances, work experience, honors and awards, school activities, financial need, or special hardships, and interview. Three finalists will be nominated by the Posey County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-98 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $486 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

The primary purposes of the LECSP are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

Wadesville Center Township Volunteer Fire Department Receives A Grant Through The Celebrating 30 Years Of Giving Grant Program

Wadesville Center Township Vol. Fire Dept., recently received a $3,000 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation through the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program.

Stephen Williams, Fire Chief, commented upon receiving the surprise grant, “We are very excited and plan to use this on several of our new projects”. The Fire Department plans to implement a Fire Warden program in all northern Posey County Schools. Schools included in this program are Saint Wendel Catholic School, North Elementary School, South Terrace Elementary School, and North Posey Jr High School. This program will help the Fire Department to maintain fire inspections on a monthly basis by teaching, and mentoring students how to conduct fire safety inspections during school hours. This will also, allow the principals of each school to address any deficiencies with Fire Department leadership and come up with a suitable resolution, in return adding another level of safety within the schools. With remaining funding, the Fire Department plans to purchase smoke detectors for Posey County residents that may not be able to afford them or have failed detectors.

The Posey County Community Foundation celebrated 30 Years of Giving on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at the Ribeyre Gym in New Harmony. This 30 ^th Anniversary celebration honored the past, present, and future by announcing additional grants to local nonprofits serving Posey County and a special matching gift opportunity.

Since July 2022, the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program allowed advisory board members to recommend $3,000 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The following advisory board members collectively granted $45,000 to these local nonprofit organizations:

Attendees also participated in a drawing to recommend additional grants to two local nonprofits. Those awarded grants at the event were:

· Poseyville Carnegie Public Library received a $1,000 grant award;

· Zion Lippe United Church of Christ, Partners in Food Program received a $100 grant award; and

· The Posey County Women’s Fund received a $100 grant award.

“Nonprofits are the heart and soul of our community, fueled by the passion and dedication of those who believe in making a positive difference. They are the architects of hope, the guardians of compassion, and the catalysts for change,” said Amy Smith, Regional Director of Community Impact and Engagement for the Posey County Community Foundation.

For the past 30 years, the Posey County Community Foundation has proven that the journey together is united in purpose and vision. With more than 100 established endowment funds, it is truly remarkable to note the growth experienced since the inception, growing to more than $11.8 million in assets, granting over $5.7 million in the community since inception.

To honor the celebration, a special matching gift opportunity is available now through June 30 ^th . Any gift to the Posey County Community Foundation from $500 to $5,000 to any endowment fund will be matched, dollar for dollar. Funds are limited so act quickly.

The Women’s Fund of Posey County, a fund held by the Posey County Community Foundation, is pleased to announce that grants totaling $20,000 were awarded to 15 organizations. This year’s list of grant recipients are:

· $2,000 to At the Cross-Mission Inc. to provide complete meals consisting of meat, vegetables, dessert, fruit, and a drink for women and children;

· $1,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Indiana to grow visibility in Posey County, and connect mentors with youth facing adversity through a multichannel marketing effort;

· $1,000 to Chemo Buddies to provide support to new cancer patients from Posey County as the need continues to grow;

· $1,000 to Griffin Community Ruritan Club Foundation, Inc. for the Youth Coaching/Program Development for the 2023/2024 Sports Program;

· $2,000 to Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet, Inc. to purchase 160+ pairs of athletic-type shoes for disadvantaged students in Mount Vernon Junior High and High School;

· $1,000 to Thrive to provide high-quality, holistic afterschool programming to 72 youth in K - 8th grades, including well-balanced, nutritious snacks;

· $1,000 to Trotter House Posey County to address the challenge of providing resources for Posey County women who need assistance before, during, and after pregnancy; and

· $2,000 to Youth First, Inc. for Youth First Social Workers embedded in eight Posey County partner schools to equip students with the skills to build mental health resilience.

“Since the fund was established 19 years ago, grants to local organizations annually support programs and services that improve the quality of life for Posey County families,” says Amy Smith, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “The Women’s Fund addresses the changing needs and priorities in Posey County through a competitive grant cycle.”

The Women’s Fund grants selection committee reviewed funding requests and contacted grant applicants for an interview. Once interviews concluded, the steering committee made recommendations on funding to the Community Foundation.

“Without donors, these grants would not be possible,” says Dianna Simkins, chair of the Women’s Fund steering committee. “The Women’s Fund makes it possible for many members of the community to pool resources in order to significantly impact our community in a positive way.”

Gray Farms Presidents Scholarship Announces Award Recipients

The Community Foundation Alliance has announced the two recipients of this year’s Gray Farms Presidents Scholarship. Beth Graber of Montgomery, Indiana, and Sophie Kloppenburg of Mt. Vernon, Indiana were both awarded $1,000 scholarships. This annual scholarship is made possible through a fund established by Gray Family heirs and friends to honor the past presidents of the Gray Family business interests. This is the first year for the scholarship with awards totaling $2,000.

Beth Graber of Montgomery, Indiana will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend the University of Southern Indiana in the fall of 2023, where she plans to study accounting. “Growing up, I have always been the girl who loves numbers and one of the few students who enjoyed spending time in math classes. While I used to think these skills were not useful, I now see that I can use my abilities to help people, even though it is with taxes and not with their physical needs. Overall, this job filled with numbers and math will keep my heart full for the years to come.” says Graber.

Sophie Kloppenburg of Mt. Vernon, IN will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend Columbia University in the fall of 2023, where she plans to study sustainable development and chemistry. “ By studying sustainable development with a minor in chemistry, I hope to research and work on expanding the use and accessibility of sustainable aviation fuel. This niche field will help push the transportation side of the aviation industry to carbon neutrality. The sustainable development major beautifully combines the science and sociopolitical aspects that make adjusting systems so complex. A minor in chemistry ensures I can understand and innovate the science behind these processes.” says Kloppenburg.

South Terrace Elementary School Receives a Grant Through The Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program

South Terrace Elementary School, recently received a $3,000 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation through the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program.

South Terrace Elementary School is a part of the MSD of North Posey School Corporation and is located in Wadesville, Indiana. The school has 408 students enrolled, in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth. For the 2020-21 school year, South Terrace placed in the top 5% of all schools in Indiana for overall test scores and is a STEM Certified School.

Posey County Community Foundation Now Accepting Grant Applications

The Posey County Community Foundation is now accepting online applications for their Community Good Grants Program. The deadline to submit applications is July 31, 2023.

The Community Foundation awards Community Good grants to charitable partners located in or directly serving Posey County. Funding opportunities are available to support a broad range of local needs. Grants are normally given as one-time support of a project but may be considered for additional support or for expansions or outgrowths of an initial project. Charitable entities can view details related to funding requirements and access the grant application via the Foundation’s website at https://www.poseycountycf.org/community-good-grants-program .

Agencies and projects that are not eligible for funding include religious organizations proposing activities that support a religious purpose, political parties or campaigns, endowment creation or debt reduction, capital campaigns, annual appeals or membership contributions, and travel requests for groups or individuals such as bands, sports teams, or school classes.

Posey County Domestic Violence Taskforce, WillowTree of Posey County recently received a $3,000 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation through the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program.

In celebration of Posey County Community Foundation’s 30 ^th Anniversary, the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program allows advisory board members to recommend $3,000 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation’s most recent grant recommendation was made by Michael Harshbarger and will provide support to the WillowTree of Posey County Community Healing Garden.

Willow Tree of Posey County provides advocacy and assistance to those affected by domestic and sexual violence and strives to interrupt the cycle of violence through outreach and education. The goal of the Community Healing Garden located at Brittlebank Park is to provide a space for the community to use as a place for contemplation and enjoyment while raising awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault in Posey County. The small garden was planted in 2021 to commemorate National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. The Mt. Vernon-Black Township Parks and Recreation Department has continually supported the garden, as it has added another aspect to Brittlebank Park with a focus on native plants and a restful space for the community to use.

Zion Lippe United Church Of Christ Partners In Food Program Receives Grant

Zion Lippe United Church of Christ, Partners in Food recently received a $3,000 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation through the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program.

In celebration of Posey County Community Foundation’s 30 ^th Anniversary, the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program allows advisory board members to recommend $3,000 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation’s most recent grant recommendation was made by Hans Schmitz and will provide general support to the Partners in Food Program.

The Partners in Food Program began as an idea among four Zion Lippe UCC members (Marvin Redman, Carl Schmitz, Al Schmitz, & Jim Droege) in 2004. The Program seeks sponsorships and connects the sponsor with participating farmers/producers who pledge the gross proceeds of one acre to the program. The proceeds collected are used to acquire hogs and cattle which are processed (by Dewig Meats & Kenny Dewig) into one-pound packages of ground pork and ground beef for delivery to the food pantries, as meat is often a scarce food item for pantries to obtain. The Program also acquires can goods, along with potatoes to be delivered to local food pantries and United Caring Services Homeless Shelter.

Posey County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications for Carran Family Scholarship

The Posey County Community Foundation is excited to announce the opening of a new scholarship opportunity, the Carran Family Scholarship. Multiple scholarships may be awarded to military veterans residing in one of the following counties Daviess, Gibson, Knox, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, or Warrick, with preference given to a Posey County resident enrolling/enrolled in any accredited vocational training program. The applicant will need to provide verification of military enrollment (DD-214 official military document), along with proof of acceptance in an accredited program.

The application, eligibility requirements, and selection criteria for the Carran Family Scholarship are posted on the website at www.poseycountycf.org/carran-family-scholarship . The application deadline is June 16, 2023, at 12:00 noon CST.

The Carran Family Scholarship is an annual scholarship established to provide support for military veterans to pursue the completion of a vocational training program.

Msd Of Mt. Vernon Receives A Grant Through The Celebrating 30 Years Of Giving Grant Program

MSD of Mt. Vernon recently received a $3,000 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation through the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program.

In celebration of Posey County Community Foundation’s 30 ^th Anniversary, the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program allows advisory board members to recommend $3,000 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation’s most recent grant recommendation was made by Jody Pfister and will provide general support to the three elementary schools within the MSD of Mt. Vernon School District, West, Marrs, and Farmersville.

Nearly 900 students, grades Kindergarten through Fifth attend the three elementary schools within the MSD of Mt. Vernon School District. Each of these schools has received from the Indiana Department of Education a State Grade of an “A”. This grade is based on Student Proficiency, Growth, Graduation, and College and Career Readiness.

Holy Angels Catholic Church Renovation Project Receives 30 Year of Giving Grant

St. Francis Xavier Church recently received a $3,000 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation through the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program.

In celebration of Posey County Community Foundation’s 30 ^th Anniversary, the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program allows advisory board members to recommend $3,000 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation’s most recent grant recommendation was made by Jim Scarafia and will provide support to the Holy Angels Catholic Church renovation project.

Holy Angels Catholic Church, located in New Harmony, Indiana was founded in 1849 as a mission of St. Francis Xavier Church in Poseyville, the Holy Angels’ congregation held mass in various locations until the permanent church was built in 1899. The Gothic Revival-style structure is part of the National Register-listed New Harmony Historic District, including the smaller New Harmony National Historic Landmark District. In 2022 a committee was formed and a campaign was started to obtain funding to rehabilitate the building, along with support ongoing maintenance. St. Francis Xavier Church owns and oversees the Holy Angels Catholic Church building.

Posey County Fair Association, Inc. Receives a Grant Through The Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program

The Posey County Fair Association, Inc. recently received a $3,000 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation through the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program.

In celebration of Posey County Community Foundation’s 30 ^th Anniversary, the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program allows advisory board members to recommend $3,000 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation’s most recent grant recommendation was made by Ashley Dorsam and will provide general support to the Posey County Fair Association, Inc.

The Posey County Fair Association, Inc. strives to take care of, provide for, and ensure that the fairgrounds are safe and welcoming to all visitors to the fair and to provide fun, entertaining, family-friendly, and educational events to our community, not only during the fair but also throughout the year, and to preserve and improve upon it for future generations of youth and community members. The first fair held in Posey County was October, 25-27,1859, and continues to be a yearly tradition in the county.

Posey County Community Foundation Announces Women’s Fund Grant Opportunity

The Women’s Fund of Posey County is now accepting applications for projects or programs supporting Posey County. Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply by completing a grant application no later than February 13, 2023.

Applications will be considered from nonprofit organizations that are deemed tax-exempt under 501(c)(3) and 509(a) of the Internal Revenue. Applications submitted by an entity under the auspices of another agency must include a written statement signed by the agency’s board president on behalf of the board of directors agreeing to act as the entity’s fiscal sponsor, to receive grant monies if awarded, and to oversee the proposed project.

The project or program must provide support in one of the following areas:

· Community Development

· Education

· Environment

· Health

· Human Services

· Youth Development

The grant application process is being conducted online via the Foundation’s website at https://www.poseycountycf.org/womens-fund-grants-program .

The Women’s Fund Steering Committee will review funding requests and contact grant applicants for an interview. Once interviews have concluded, the steering committee will make its recommendations on funding to the Posey County Community Foundation. No lobbying or soliciting of the steering committee or board members will be permitted.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church/Magic After-School Program Receives A Grant

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church-MAGIC After-School Program recently received a $3,000 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation through the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program.

In celebration of Posey County Community Foundation’s 30 ^th Anniversary, the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program allows advisory board members to recommend $3,000 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation’s most recent grant recommendation was made by Jane Koch and will provide general support to the MAGIC After-School Program.

The MAGIC After-School Program was established in 2005 with the objective of helping and reinforcing children’s academic and social achievements. The program is open to students in grades third thru sixth, that reside in Northern Posey County. The mission of the MAGIC Program (Making A Gigantic Improvement in Choices), is to improve the lives of the students by teaching them the value of good choices in life.

Posey County Community Foundation Announces The 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Recipient

The Posey County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Posey County – Reagan Koester of North Posey High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“The nominating committee felt that Reagan was the perfect choice as the recipient, not only is she a well-rounded student but also strives to be a role model to others, while her enthusiasm is contagious and enlightening”, said Amy Smith, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact for the Posey County Community Foundation.

Reagan is the daughter of Dale and Lisa Koester, of Wadesville, Indiana, and plans to attend Purdue University to study Agriculture Business with a concentration in Finance and Pre-Law. In addition to excelling academically, she has been involved in a variety of school activities including the Student Council, FFA, and Business Professionals of America. Reagan has served as the Vice-President of the Class of 2022 for all four years of high school. During her participation in these organizations, Reagan held several officer positions, ranging from Treasurer to President. Outside of school, she is involved with 4-H and is the founder of several original service projects, including Ping Pong for Poverty and Fun for Foster Families. She is a YES (Youth Engaged Service) Grant Spokesperson, volunteers with the United Way and has served as an Indiana Senate Page, and is active in her church as the Youth Leader.

Reagan received the award of Indiana Speech and Debate State Quarterfinalist and Sectional Champion; is the Team Leader for the “We the People”, Government Debate Team; and has received multiple accolades during her participation in FFA. After overcoming several sport-related injuries, she persevered and received four Varsity Letters; was named “30 Players to Watch” by the Evansville Courier and Press, and has been Team Captain in Soccer where she holds three Varsity Letters in track and field. Lastly, she gives back to the sport by refereeing youth soccer.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for undergraduate students studying on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

“This year we had 14 extremely talented students apply for the scholarship. Each student not only excelled academically but also participated in a wide range of extracurricular and community activities,” said Smith. She added, “The quality of the applications made the selection process difficult for the very dedicated committee, which thoroughly reviewed each application and scored fairly based on the set forth guidelines.”

Scholarship award alternates were also announced. The first alternate, Dharma Fribley will receive a scholarship from the Friends of Posey County Fund. Rylan Paul was named the second alternate.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-99 school year and has supported the program every year since with grants totaling in excess of $486 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception.

Posey County Community Foundation Community Scholarship Program Now Accepting Applications

This year, donors to the Posey County Community Foundation are once again making scholarship awards available through the Community Scholarship Program.

“Many Foundation donors have honored their loved ones, high schools, or professions by endowing scholarship opportunities through the Foundation,” says Amy Smith, the Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “We administer separate scholarship funds established by individuals, families, and organizations to assist local students in pursuit of advanced education. Together, these scholarships make up our Community Scholarship Program.”

Eligibility requirements and selection criteria are determined by donors and are posted on the website. Each scholarship is unique and supports students with a variety of backgrounds, educational goals, and economic statuses. Awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin and are based on a competitive process which may consider academic achievement, extracurricular activities, personal aspirations, educational goals, and financial need.

The Foundation offers the following tips to help students complete their applications:

· Review the Community Scholarship Tips to Apply document.

· Print the Student Review Sheet to assist with your scholarship review process.

· Begin working on the application early.

· Follow all instructions carefully and make sure you are submitting all the required parts (including letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.).

· Check and double-check your application before submitting.

The deadline to apply is 12:00 midnight on Monday, February 13, 2023.

Posey County Council On Aging Receives A Grant Through The Celebrating 30 Years Of Giving Grant Program

Posey County Council on Aging recently received a $3,000 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation through the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program.

In celebration of Posey County Community Foundation’s 30 ^th Anniversary, the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program allows advisory board members to recommend $3,000 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation’s most recent grant recommendation was made by Kathryn Lee-Kalsch and will provide match funding for the purchase of an eight-passenger lift vehicle utilized for medical transportation for aged, disabled, or low-income Posey County residents to medical professionals.

Posey County Council on Aging started in 1974 for the purpose of improving the quality of life for aged and disabled Posey County residents. The primary objective of the agency is threefold 1) To enable aged and disabled adults to live in their homes as long as possible with appropriate supportive services; 2) To remove individual and social barriers to economic and personal independence for aged and disabled persons, including the provision of opportunities for volunteer activities; 3) To act as an advocate of aged and disabled persons in developing community resources for the Posey County area while providing a comprehensive service network.

Posey County Community Foundation Awards More Than $207,000 to 28 Nonprofit Partners

The Posey County Community Foundation has awarded $207,042.81 in grants to 28 local nonprofit organizations through its 2022 Community Good Grants program. This year’s grants provide flexible funding for a variety of charitable projects and organizations serving Posey County.

This year’s grant recipients were:

· $5,530 to Chemo Buddies to provide first-day chemo comfort kit bags (Chapstick, hand sanitizer, port pillow, neck rest, handmade warm blanket, tissues, game books, candy, chocolate, journal, pen, etc.), wigs, hats, and accessories;

· $14,600 to the Posey County Council on Aging to provide match money for the purchase of an eight-passenger lift vehicle replacement that is necessary for medical transportation in rural county Posey County for those in need;

· $12,000 to Youth First, Inc. to provide support to Youth First Social Workers in eight Posey County schools as they equip at-risk youth with tools needed to build strong and resilient futures;

· $2,413.13 to Family Matters of Posey County Indiana, Inc. to provide household cleaning and hygiene items to families;

· $7,000 to Thrive to provide high-quality, holistic afterschool programming to Mt. Vernon youth in K-8th grade from West Elementary and the Mt. Vernon Junior High School;

· $5,000 to Zion Lippe United Church of Christ to support the Partners in Food program which assists with the food needs of the Posey County food pantries and United Caring Services Inc.;

· $3,000 to Tri-State Food Bank to provide support to partner agencies in Posey County which will provide food for 150 households at risk of hunger;

· $2,500 to Holly's House, Inc. to provide support for the Think First & Stay Safe child abuse prevention program targeting elementary students, teaching skills to keep kids safe from abuse;

· $3,250 to Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Inc. to provide funding to build and deliver fully furnished beds to kids who do not have a place to sleep;

· $3,000 to Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet, Inc. to purchase a minimum of 200 pairs of shoes

for the most disadvantaged students in Posey County schools;

· $2,100 to Bread of Life Ministry Inc. to provide funds to pay the freight costs for donated food and to purchase food items at discounted prices to distribute to low-income families in the Tri-State area;

· $10,000 to Posey Humane Society to provide a low-cost spay/neuter program for homeless dogs and cats in Posey County;

· $10,000 to Children's Learning Center of Posey County to provide funding for adjustments needed throughout the facility including the playground, classroom materials, and policies/procedures to gain accreditation with NAEYC which would allow for more funding opportunities and be declared a high-rated learning center;

· $10,849.06 to Mt. Vernon Ministerial Association River Bend Food Pantry to provide funding to upgrade equipment to make it easier for clients to transport food to their vehicles and to purchase food for the Summer Kid's Program;

· $6,425.62 to St. Paul's United Methodist Church to provide materials needed for teaching geography using maps, as well as math using sewing and cooking at the MAGIC After-School Program;

· $6,700 to Posey County Domestic Violence Taskforce (Willow Tree of Posey County) to purchase essential supplies for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse residing in the Willow Tree of Posey County Safe House and to purchase informational materials and promotional items which will be distributed throughout Posey County to reach victims of domestic violence and sexual assault;

· $5,000 to Trades for Tomorrow to provide funding for middle school students to visit local building trade schools and for supplies needed for the program;

· $8,000 to Deaconess Hospital Foundation to provide support in delivering mammography education and screening services to Posey County women in need;

· $10,000 to the New Harmony Volunteer Fire Department to update and add additional headsets to their frontline apparatus;

· $10,000 to Mount Vernon Youth Baseball to provide funding to assist in replacing older equipment and for minor improvements to the facility;

· $7,500 to Mount Vernon-Black Township Parks and Recreation to replace old lights that have not worked for years with new LED lights at the tennis/pickleball courts at Brittlebank Park;

· $5,500 to the Town of Poseyville to purchase one (1) Guardian F speed display kit, 12volt 24-hour timer, and BO-watt solar power supply to help officers educate the public about the dangers of highspeed traffic within town limits;

· $22,000 to Posey County Fair Association to update the Posey County Fairgrounds Main Arena lights to LED;

· $6,675 to St. Wendel Catholic School to purchase 2-way radios to increase communication in times of emergencies;

· $3,000 to St. John's Episcopal Church to purchase furnishings and specifically safety devices for the DCS transitional house;

· $10,000 to Ribeyre Gymnasium Restoration Group to replace exterior east front doors;

· $10,000 to Rapp Granary-Owen Foundation to repair as needed all exterior wood e.g. windows, window frames, dormers, and overhang which includes scrapping, priming, and two coats of finish paint; and

Wildcats Remembered Fund Donates Over $16,000 to Mt. Vernon High School

The Wildcats Remembered Fund held by the Posey County Community Foundation recently awarded a grant to the Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) for $16,989.42. The check was presented to Mr. Kevin Krizan’s Innovation Class recently and will be utilized by the school to provide further learning opportunities to the students.

The Wildcats Remembered Fund is a designated fund created by G. Donald and Cecelia J. Goerlitz to benefit the MVHS. Designated funds with the Posey County Community Foundation allow donors to support a specific organization or organizations in perpetuity.

MVHS principal, Mr. Jones commented, “In the past, the funds have been utilized to purchase specialized equipment for the school. This year we are excited to bring in outside speakers to present to the students.” He added that, “this additional funding provides the school with opportunities they would not otherwise be able to provide to students.”

The Children’s Learning Center of Posey County Receives Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant

The Children’s Learning Center of Posey County recently received a $3,000 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation through the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program.

In celebration of Posey County Community Foundation’s 30 ^th Anniversary, the Celebrating 30 Years of Giving Grant Program allows advisory board members to recommend $3,000 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation’s most recent grant recommendation was made by Jake McGennis and will provide general support to the Children’s Learning Center of Posey County.

The Children’s Learning Center of Posey County was established in 1995 and serves children 6 weeks-age 12. The Center provides whole-child education that includes everything from academic growth to social-emotional development. The Children’s Learning Center offers services to school-age children before school and after school, along with days off school, and during summer break.

The Women’s Fund of Posey County hosted a Golf Scramble at Western Hills Country Club in Mount Vernon on Monday, September 26, 2022. The event raised $6,300 which will be added to the grant dollars awarded to local nonprofits during the next grants cycle.

Posey County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications For The 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program

The 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available in Posey County through the Posey County Community Foundation. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) will provide 143 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Posey County. LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Posey County through the Posey County Community Foundation, is open to all Indiana residents who:

• graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2023 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2023;

• intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and

• meet the criteria specific to their local community foundation.

Students can learn more about the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Posey County and apply for this scholarship by visiting https://www.Poseycountycf.org/lilly-endowment-community-scholarship-program . Applications must be completed and submitted by Tuesday, September 6, 2022, before 12 midnight, to be considered.

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: GPA, curriculum, community service, and volunteer activities, essay, personal statement/unusual circumstances, work experience, honors and awards, school activities, financial need, or special hardships, and interview. Three finalists will be nominated by the Posey County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for the final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-1998 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $424 million. Nearly 5,000 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

The Posey County Community Foundation is again pleased to offer the LECSP for its 26 ^th year in Posey County. Amy Smith, the Community Foundation’s Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact, says, “The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship is a great opportunity for Posey County high

school seniors, and I am excited to be a part of the process that will recognize student achievements and goals. The scholarship will make an enormous impact on the recipient’s life and help them excel in their educational endeavors and beyond.”

Posey County Community Foundation Awards Over $85,000 In Community Scholarships

The Posey County Community Foundation announces the distribution of community scholarships totaling $85,600. This year, funds established by generous donors, provided scholarships to 23 area students.

In addition to announcing the recipients, the Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact, Amy Smith states, “The Posey County Community Foundation is thankful to our generous fund founders and donors who make these scholarship awards possible. Their investment in the education of our youth has impacted each of these students’ futures. The process of choosing who will be awarded each of these scholarships is undertaken with dedication and discipline by a committee of volunteer leaders. We are grateful for their hard work and dedication in doing this. The process is never easy because our Posey County students are outstanding.”

The scholarships announced are:

The Ben Dickhaut Memorial 4-H and FFA Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the friends and family of Ben Dickhaut for students who participated as a member of 4-H for five years, and/or FFA for two years. This year’s award is $3,000 and the recipient is Renee Bippus, Mt. Vernon High School.

The Bobby Rogge Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created in memory of Bobby Rogge by his father and stepmother, Bob and Cindy Rogge. This year’s award is $500 and the recipient is Alison Gansman, Mount Vernon High School.

The Byron and Lila Brenton Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Metropolitan School District of North Posey County in memory of former school superintendent Byron Brenton and his wife. Two scholarships were awarded in the amount of $5,000 each. This year’s recipients were Jaedyn Rhineburger and Paige Exline, both attending North Posey High School.

The Cash Family Scholarship was created by Michael G. and Brenda J. Cash. This year’s award is $500 and the recipient is Destiny Morgan, Mount Vernon High School.

The CountryMark Technical Trade Scholarship was created by CountryMark for students who plan to pursue a degree in technology or engineering. This year’s award is $4,500 and the recipient is Charles “Clay” Weilbrenner, Mt. Vernon High School.

The Craig Andrew Spradley Memorial Scholarship was created by Andrew Q. and Christine L. Spradley in memory of their son. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is Jaedyn Rhineburger, North Posey High School.

The Estate of Aletha C. Martin created the Edwin W. Martin and Aletha C. Martin Scholarship. Scholarship awards, in the amount of $10,000 each, were provided to two students graduating from North Posey High School. This year’s recipients are Anna Gries and Sydni Flowers.

The George and Peggy Rapp Scholarship were created by George F. and Peggy M. Rapp to support students living in Harmony Township as they pursue their educational goals. The scholarship in the amount of $5,000, was awarded to Ella Galvin, from North Posey High School.

The Gillenwater Junior College Scholarship was established by William (Bill) and Muriel (Merle) Gillenwater. Both Bill and Merle graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1965. This scholarship represents their devotion to their Posey County home and belief that providing opportunities for advanced education for Posey county students will help secure the community’s future. The scholarship in the amount of $1,500 was awarded to Olivia Gerton, Mt. Vernon High School.

The Gillenwater College Scholarship Award is an annually renewable scholarship created by William Gillenwater III to encourage Posey County High School students to further their education, recognize the academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is Isaac Parmenter, Mt. Vernon High School.

The Herb and Betty Curry Scholarship were established by Herb and Betty Curry to help Posey County graduating seniors pursue advanced education in music, music education, or the performing arts. Two scholarships were awarded this year, in the amount of $2,500 each, to Karly Damm, North Posey High School, and Renee Bippus, Mt. Vernon High School.

The James W. Moore Scholarship is awarded annually to an Mt. Vernon High School graduating senior pursuing post-secondary education in industrial arts. The scholarship was created by Kent, Greg, and Keith J. Moore in memory of their father. This year’s recipient is Charles “Clay” Weilbrenner, Mt. Vernon High School and the award amount is $300.

The Katie Kanowsky Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Frank and Kathy Kanowsky and friends in memory of their daughter, to encourage North Posey High School students to pursue higher education and to use their knowledge and skills to benefit tristate communities after graduation. This year’s award is $3,000 and the recipient is Audrey Hirsch, North Posey High School.

The Kevin Dillon North Posey Memorial Scholarship was created by the family of Kevin Dillon. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is RuthAnn Meyer, North Posey High School.

The Kiwanis Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club in honor of Phil Ray for his many contributions and service to Kiwanis, the Metropolitan School District of Mt. Vernon, the students, and staff of West Elementary School, and the community of Mt. Vernon. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is Julia Kingery, Mount Vernon High School.

The Mac McCutchan Memorial Scholarship was created by the children of Mac McCutchan in memory of their father. This year’s award is $2,000 and the recipient is Audrey Hirsch, North Posey High School.

The Margaret Corbin Wathen Scholarship was created by Tom Wathen in memory of his wife. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is Isaiah McFadden, Mount Vernon High School.

The McFadden Farms Trust Scholarship was established to assist graduating seniors of any Posey County high school or graduates within the last five years planning to further their education in the trades. This year’s award is $5,000 and the recipient is Katelyn Crum, a Mt. Vernon High School 2021 graduate, currently attending The Salon Professional Academy.

The North Star Scholarship is a renewable scholarship created by an anonymous donor for graduating Seniors of North Posey High School. This year’s award is $2,000 and the recipient is Paige Exline.

The Oscar and Helen Uebelhack Agriculture Scholarship was created by David K. Dennis and Jon Uebelhack in memory of their parents. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is Renee Bippus, Mount Vernon High School.

The Posey County Co-op Scholarship was created by the Posey County Co-op. This year’s award is $2,000 and the recipient is Kaylee Bender, North Posey High School.

The Riedford Health Professions Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship established by anonymous donors in honor of Bernard (Bernie) Riedford, a teacher who was instrumental in a program designed to introduce Mount Vernon High School students to the multiple professions available in the field of health care. This year’s award is $1,000 and the recipient is Destiny Morgan, Mount Vernon High School.

The Robby Wilson Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created in memory of Robby Wilson by his father, Tim Wilson; his sisters, Jodi Moore and Wendy Wilson; and his brother, Jason Wilson. This year’s award is $500 and the recipient is Maxwell Muensterman, North Posey High School.

The Rosella and Doyle Oursler Scholarship were established by Doyle Oursler in memory of his beloved wife Rosella. This year’s recipient is Camden Lupfer, North Posey High School and the award amount is $1,500.

The SABIC Innovative Plastics Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by SABIC Innovative Plastics to support post-secondary education for the children of employees who work at the Mt. Vernon, Indiana facility. This year’s award is $1,000 and the recipient is Shawn Lightner, North High School.

The Whitney Wehr Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Greg and Bridget Wehr in memory of their daughter. This year’s award is $5,000 and the recipient is River Snodgrass, Mount Vernon High School.

The William H. Keck Leadership Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the family of William H. Keck. This year’s award is $4,000 and the recipient is Zachary Culley, Mount Vernon High School.

In addition, the Community Foundation administers the Posey County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship program. As in years past, the Community Foundation awards a scholarship to the student selected as an alternate. The scholarship is supported through donations to the Friends of Posey County endowment fund. The amount being awarded this year is $2,000 and the recipient is Kaylee Bender, North Posey High School.

Women’s Fund of Posey County Announces Grant Recipients

The Women’s Fund, held by the Posey County Community Foundation, is pleased to announce that grants totaling $19,327 were awarded to thirteen organizations. This year’s list of grant recipients are:

· Chemo Buddies to provide all of the new cancer patients from Posey County with comfort kits.

· The Isaiah 1:17 Project to provide a discounted shopping experience for foster families for children in their care at Christmas.

· Family Matters of Posey County, Indiana, Inc. to purchase items and equipment needed to adequately inform parents and caregivers of the need for proper sleeping accommodations for infants.

· Mt. Vernon Ministerial Association River Bend Food Pantry to supplement the continuation of the Summer Kid's Program and to provide dairy products to the clients of River Bend Food Pantry.

· Thrive to add a second programming site and more than double the number of children they are able to serve through this expansion project.

· At the Cross-Mission Inc. to purchase food and supplies (plates, forks, spoons. etc.) to provide to-go meals for those that need them.

· Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Inc. to build and deliver beds, sheets, pillows, and blankets to local children ages 3-17 who do not have a bed.

· Willow Tree of Posey County to purchase a washer/dryer unit(s) and install and create hookups in the units at the new safe house for victims of domestic violence/sexual assault in Posey County.

· Town of Poseyville to purchase concrete flooring for the community shelter house.

· Posey County Council on Aging to cover the expense of the dumpster rental during the replacement of the Wellness Center roof.

· St. Paul's United Methodist Church for the M.A.G.I.C. (Making A Gigantic Improvement in Choices) Money Management Teaching program.

· North Elementary PTO, Inc. to complete playground improvements, in order to replace equipment that is outdated or does not meet state safety standards.

· Buffalo Trace Council, Boy Scouts of America to provide Scouting STEM kits to current Cub Scouts and distribute as part of Fall recruitment to attract future Scouts into the program in Posey County.

“Since the fund was established 18 years ago, grants to local organizations annually support programs and services that improve the quality of life for Posey County families,” says Amy Smith, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “The Women’s Fund addresses the changing needs and priorities in Posey County through a competitive grant cycle.”

The Women’s Fund Grants Selection Committee reviewed funding requests and contacted grant applicants for an interview. Once interviews concluded, the Steering Committee made recommendations on funding to the Community Foundation.

“Without donors, these grants would not be awarded,” says Dianna Simkins, chair of the Women’s Fund Steering Committee. “The Women’s Fund makes it possible for many members of the community to pool resources in order to significantly impact our community in a positive way.”

Posey County Community Foundation Now Accepting Grant Applications

(Posey County, Indiana) The Posey County Community Foundation is now accepting online applications for their Community Good Grants Program. The deadline to submit applications is August 5, 2022.

Charitable entities can view details related to funding requirements and access the grant application via the Foundation’s website at https://www.poseycountycf.org/community-good-grants-program .

Agencies and projects not eligible for funding include religious organizations proposing activities that support a religious purpose, political parties or campaigns, endowment creation or debt reduction, capital campaigns, annual appeals or membership contributions, and travel requests for groups or individuals such as bands, sports teams, or school classes.

Posey County Community Foundation Announces Women's Fund Grant Opportunity

(Mount Vernon, Indiana) The Women’s Fund of Posey County is now accepting applications for projects or programs supporting Posey County. Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply by completing a grant application no later than March 1, 2022.

Applications will be considered from nonprofit organizations that are deemed tax exempt under 501(c)(3) and 509(a) of the Internal Revenue. Applications submitted by an entity under the auspices of another agency must include a written statement signed by the agency’s board president on behalf of the board of directors agreeing to act as the entity’s fiscal sponsor, to receive grant monies if awarded, and to oversee the proposed project.

The project or program must provide support in one the following areas:

Community Development

Education

Environment

Health

Human Services

Youth Development

The grant application process is being conducted online via the Foundation’s website at https://communityfoundationalliance.org/grant/womens-fund-grant-program.

The Women’s Fund Steering Committee will review funding requests and contact grant applicants for an interview. Once interviews have concluded, the steering committee will make its recommendations on funding to the Posey County Community Foundation. No lobbying or soliciting of steering committee or board members will be permitted.

Posey County Community Foundation Community Scholarship Program Now Accepting Applications

(Mount Vernon, Indiana) This year, donors to the Posey County Community Foundation are once again making scholarship awards available through the Community Scholarship Program.

“Many Foundation donors have honored their loved ones, high schools, or professions by endowing scholarship opportunities through the Foundation,” says Amy Smith, the Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “We administer separate scholarship funds established by individuals, families, and organizations to assist local students in pursuit of advanced education. Together, these scholarships make up our Community Scholarship Program.”

Eligibility requirements and selection criteria are determined by donors and are posted on the website. Each scholarship is unique and supports students with a variety of backgrounds, educational goals, and economic statuses. Awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin and are based on a competitive process which may consider academic achievement, extracurricular activities, personal aspirations, educational goals, and financial need.

The Foundation offers the following tips to help students complete their applications:

Begin working on the application early.

Search for scholarships that match your unique interests and hobbies.

Take the time to write required essays. It’s worth the extra effort.

Follow all instructions carefully and make sure you are submitting all the required parts (including letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.).

Ask a friend or teacher to read your application and essay for any mistakes that you may have missed.

Check and double-check your application before submitting.

The deadline to apply is 12:00 midnight on Sunday, February 27, 2022.

(Mt. Vernon, Indiana) The Posey County Community Foundation is distributing $125,949.70 in grants to 25 local nonprofit organizations through their 2021 Community Good Grants program.

This year’s grants provide flexible funding for a variety of charitable projects and organizations serving Posey County.

The grants awarded are:

$6,000 to At the Cross Mission to feed those that are hungry including the homeless, unemployed, underemployed, veterans, children, youth, adults and senior adults;
$2,000 reserved for the First Alternate to the 2022 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Posey County to provide one $2,000 scholarship;
$2,100 to Bread of Life Ministry Inc . to provide funds to pay freight for donated food and to purchase food items at discounted prices to distribute to low income families in the Tri State area;
$5,000 to Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry to provide funds to pay processing fees for deer and livestock donated by hunters and farmers, the meat is donated to food banks;
$8,683.54 to Rapp Granary - Owen Foundation to replace the 3-Phase electric elevator motor which has shorted out and needs to be replaced after 21 years of use;
$4,391.62 to St. Wendel Catholic School to purchase of Follett's Destiny library automation system for the Saint Wendel Catholic School Library;
$7,850.00 to Thrive to fund high-quality, holistic afterschool programming to Mt. Vernon youth in K - 8th grade from West Elementary and the Junior High School;
$10,000 to United Way of Posey County to provide funding for mailing of one high-quality book per month from the Dolly's Imagination Library to Posey County residents during their ages of 0 and 5;
$2,649.59 to Mt. Vernon Ministerial Association River Bend Food Pantry to purchase equipment that is well-worn and in need of upgrading, along with other items needed to make the pantry run smoothly and more safely;
$5,040.00 to Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana to facilitate 72 programs in Posey County, serving 1,622 students, focusing on Work Readiness, Entrepreneurship, and/or Financial Literacy;
$9,500.00 to Mount Vernon Youth Baseball to provide funding to improve our facilities by replacing each of our batting cage nets at the baseball fields and installing overhead safety netting;
$1,500.00 to Holly's House, Inc . to support the “Think First & Stay Safe” child abuse prevention program targeting elementary students that teaches skills to keep kids safe from abuse;
$4,330.00 to St. Stephens Episcopal Church to provide funding for their “Ring Out for Good: Repair and Restoration of St. Stephen's Bell Tower”, to repair to the interior of the bell tower which includes a suspended ceiling, drywall, reinstall tile baseboards, and painting;
$3,000.00 to Zion Lippe United Church of Christ for funding to renovate our playground which is used daily by the surrounding community;
$3,314.00 to Griffin Community Ruritan Club Foundation, Inc. to provide funding to bring the emergency lighting system up to code in their Community Center;
$3,200.00 to Evansville Christian Life Center to provide funding for their Truth Talk program which collaborates with local schools to educate students with age appropriate curriculum focused on healthy relationships and sex education;
$7,000.00 to Youth First to fund the “Youth First Prevention & Early Intervention” program in eight Posey County Schools;
$5,000.00 to Zion Lippe United Church of Christ to provide funding to the “Partners in Food Program” to assist in the food needs of the Posey County Food Pantries and United Caring Services Inc;
$3,000.00 to Tri-State Food Bank to fund their “Mobile Food Distribution” in which they will partner with St Peter's United Church of Christ in Wadesville, Indiana to provide food for 150 households at risk of hunger;
$5,500.00 to Cancer Pathways Midwest to provide funding to deliver an interactive cancer prevention/coping skills curriculum to youth and teachers, building a foundation for a tidal wave of impact;
$7,650.00 to Mount Vernon-Black Township Parks and Recreation to provide funding for the painting of Brittlebank Park tennis courts and adding Pickleball courts (including equipment)
$3,878.95 to Wolfgang Orchestra and Chorus, Inc to fund the Wolfgang Orchestra and Chorus in their performances by providing a new instrument and equipment;
$2,000.00 to Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra to fund the 2021-2022 Helen M. McKinney Young People's Concerts which enables students from Posey County to attend the March, 2022, Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra Helen M. McKinney Young People's Concerts;
$4,615.00 to Posey County 4-H Fair Association to provide funding for updating the Posey County Community Center external/parking lot lights to LED;
$8,747.00 to The Isaiah 1:17 Project to provided funding for their “Valuing Every Child & Supporting Fostering Families at Christmas” program;
