Posey County Community Foundation Awards Over $85,000 In Community Scholarships
The Posey County Community Foundation announces the distribution of community scholarships totaling $85,600. This year, funds established by generous donors, provided scholarships to 23 area students.
In addition to announcing the recipients, the Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact, Amy Smith states, “The Posey County Community Foundation is thankful to our generous fund founders and donors who make these scholarship awards possible. Their investment in the education of our youth has impacted each of these students’ futures. The process of choosing who will be awarded each of these scholarships is undertaken with dedication and discipline by a committee of volunteer leaders. We are grateful for their hard work and dedication in doing this. The process is never easy because our Posey County students are outstanding.”
The scholarships announced are:
The Ben Dickhaut Memorial 4-H and FFA Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the friends and family of Ben Dickhaut for students who participated as a member of 4-H for five years, and/or FFA for two years. This year’s award is $3,000 and the recipient is Renee Bippus, Mt. Vernon High School.
The Bobby Rogge Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created in memory of Bobby Rogge by his father and stepmother, Bob and Cindy Rogge. This year’s award is $500 and the recipient is Alison Gansman, Mount Vernon High School.
The Byron and Lila Brenton Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Metropolitan School District of North Posey County in memory of former school superintendent Byron Brenton and his wife. Two scholarships were awarded in the amount of $5,000 each. This year’s recipients were Jaedyn Rhineburger and Paige Exline, both attending North Posey High School.
The Cash Family Scholarship was created by Michael G. and Brenda J. Cash. This year’s award is $500 and the recipient is Destiny Morgan, Mount Vernon High School.
The CountryMark Technical Trade Scholarship was created by CountryMark for students who plan to pursue a degree in technology or engineering. This year’s award is $4,500 and the recipient is Charles “Clay” Weilbrenner, Mt. Vernon High School.
The Craig Andrew Spradley Memorial Scholarship was created by Andrew Q. and Christine L. Spradley in memory of their son. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is Jaedyn Rhineburger, North Posey High School.
The Estate of Aletha C. Martin created the Edwin W. Martin and Aletha C. Martin Scholarship. Scholarship awards, in the amount of $10,000 each, were provided to two students graduating from North Posey High School. This year’s recipients are Anna Gries and Sydni Flowers.
The George and Peggy Rapp Scholarship were created by George F. and Peggy M. Rapp to support students living in Harmony Township as they pursue their educational goals. The scholarship in the amount of $5,000, was awarded to Ella Galvin, from North Posey High School.
The Gillenwater Junior College Scholarship was established by William (Bill) and Muriel (Merle) Gillenwater. Both Bill and Merle graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1965. This scholarship represents their devotion to their Posey County home and belief that providing opportunities for advanced education for Posey county students will help secure the community’s future. The scholarship in the amount of $1,500 was awarded to Olivia Gerton, Mt. Vernon High School.
The Gillenwater College Scholarship Award is an annually renewable scholarship created by William Gillenwater III to encourage Posey County High School students to further their education, recognize the academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is Isaac Parmenter, Mt. Vernon High School.
The Herb and Betty Curry Scholarship were established by Herb and Betty Curry to help Posey County graduating seniors pursue advanced education in music, music education, or the performing arts. Two scholarships were awarded this year, in the amount of $2,500 each, to Karly Damm, North Posey High School, and Renee Bippus, Mt. Vernon High School.
The James W. Moore Scholarship is awarded annually to an Mt. Vernon High School graduating senior pursuing post-secondary education in industrial arts. The scholarship was created by Kent, Greg, and Keith J. Moore in memory of their father. This year’s recipient is Charles “Clay” Weilbrenner, Mt. Vernon High School and the award amount is $300.
The Katie Kanowsky Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Frank and Kathy Kanowsky and friends in memory of their daughter, to encourage North Posey High School students to pursue higher education and to use their knowledge and skills to benefit tristate communities after graduation. This year’s award is $3,000 and the recipient is Audrey Hirsch, North Posey High School.
The Kevin Dillon North Posey Memorial Scholarship was created by the family of Kevin Dillon. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is RuthAnn Meyer, North Posey High School.
The Kiwanis Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club in honor of Phil Ray for his many contributions and service to Kiwanis, the Metropolitan School District of Mt. Vernon, the students, and staff of West Elementary School, and the community of Mt. Vernon. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is Julia Kingery, Mount Vernon High School.
The Mac McCutchan Memorial Scholarship was created by the children of Mac McCutchan in memory of their father. This year’s award is $2,000 and the recipient is Audrey Hirsch, North Posey High School.
The Margaret Corbin Wathen Scholarship was created by Tom Wathen in memory of his wife. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is Isaiah McFadden, Mount Vernon High School.
The McFadden Farms Trust Scholarship was established to assist graduating seniors of any Posey County high school or graduates within the last five years planning to further their education in the trades. This year’s award is $5,000 and the recipient is Katelyn Crum, a Mt. Vernon High School 2021 graduate, currently attending The Salon Professional Academy.
The North Star Scholarship is a renewable scholarship created by an anonymous donor for graduating Seniors of North Posey High School. This year’s award is $2,000 and the recipient is Paige Exline.
The Oscar and Helen Uebelhack Agriculture Scholarship was created by David K. Dennis and Jon Uebelhack in memory of their parents. This year’s award is $1,500 and the recipient is Renee Bippus, Mount Vernon High School.
The Posey County Co-op Scholarship was created by the Posey County Co-op. This year’s award is $2,000 and the recipient is Kaylee Bender, North Posey High School.
The Riedford Health Professions Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship established by anonymous donors in honor of Bernard (Bernie) Riedford, a teacher who was instrumental in a program designed to introduce Mount Vernon High School students to the multiple professions available in the field of health care. This year’s award is $1,000 and the recipient is Destiny Morgan, Mount Vernon High School.
The Robby Wilson Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created in memory of Robby Wilson by his father, Tim Wilson; his sisters, Jodi Moore and Wendy Wilson; and his brother, Jason Wilson. This year’s award is $500 and the recipient is Maxwell Muensterman, North Posey High School.
The Rosella and Doyle Oursler Scholarship were established by Doyle Oursler in memory of his beloved wife Rosella. This year’s recipient is Camden Lupfer, North Posey High School and the award amount is $1,500.
The SABIC Innovative Plastics Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by SABIC Innovative Plastics to support post-secondary education for the children of employees who work at the Mt. Vernon, Indiana facility. This year’s award is $1,000 and the recipient is Shawn Lightner, North High School.
The Whitney Wehr Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Greg and Bridget Wehr in memory of their daughter. This year’s award is $5,000 and the recipient is River Snodgrass, Mount Vernon High School.
The William H. Keck Leadership Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the family of William H. Keck. This year’s award is $4,000 and the recipient is Zachary Culley, Mount Vernon High School.

In addition, the Community Foundation administers the Posey County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship program. As in years past, the Community Foundation awards a scholarship to the student selected as an alternate. The scholarship is supported through donations to the Friends of Posey County endowment fund. The amount being awarded this year is $2,000 and the recipient is Kaylee Bender, North Posey High School.
